Strengthening diplomatic engagement and multinational cooperation for the operationalisation of the Combined Maritime Task Force in the Gulf of Guinea.
On 30 July 2025, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) hosted the Commander of the Combined Maritime Task Force for the Gulf of Guinea (CMTF) at his office, marking a significant step toward strengthening inter-ministerial and international collaboration on maritime security.
The visit followed a formal communication from the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on the operationalisation of the CMTF and the need for structured engagement with international partners to ensure effective multinational participation in the task force.
During the meeting, the Permanent Secretary welcomed the establishment of the CMTF, describing it as a timely and necessary multinational and multidimensional approach to addressing the complex security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea.
He further acknowledged the Mission Support Component (MSC) concept, proposed to be led by a seasoned diplomat, as a critical pillar for sustaining political support, diplomatic coordination, and long-term strategic alignment among participating nations.
The Permanent Secretary assured the Commander of the Ministry's full support and confirmed that immediate engagements would commence, including consultations with embassies of signatory nations to the CMTF - GoG Concept of Operations (CONOPS), in order to advance coordinated implementation and international buy-in.
